Just so you know, I'm a huge fan of using all of the words available to me in the English language, so please proceed with caution if young ears are around.
Hi there. Welcome back to Your Favorite You. I was recently reading through one of my old journals that I kept when I first started on my coaching journey in 2018. I was wondering why I have been so successful at working toward my favorite me since I started to work with coaches. I was kind of wondering what it was about me that made me go all in on myself and jump into coaching before I even really knew what it was.
It got me thinking about the fact that some of you out there listening might think that I am some kind of magical unicorn. I mean, I am of course, but so were all of you listening right now. I really and truly am no different than you. Just to recap, for those of you who might not have started the podcast as episode number one and listened through to number 45 as I would and for those of you who might not know me in real life, I actually found coaching in December, 2017 when I joined a group coaching program for weight loss for doctors.
After that six-month group coaching program was over, I decided that my investment in myself had worked out so well that I wanted to concentrate on improving my already pretty great marriage. So, I hired my one-on-one marriage coach, Maggie Reyes. We worked together one-on-one for six months, and it actually turned out to be eight months because she made some changes in her business that prolonged our coaching arrangement, and I am forever grateful for that.
So, I decided that even though my marriage was already pretty great, there is always room for improvement. I didn't need to be considering separation or divorce to make the investment worth it. And man, now that John and I are going to be empty nesters, literally two weeks away from when you're listening to this today, what an amazing decision that was for me and for him and for our family.
When I first worked with Maggie, I was still in valedictorian energy. You can go listen to my earlier podcast if you don't know what I mean by valedictorian energy. I think most of you do know exactly what that means, but we will link it in the show notes just in case in this energy, which honestly is not always a bad thing.
Remembering that nothing is all good or all bad. I committed to sending Maggie my thoughts on a daily basis for over eight months, so when I say she knows my brain better than I do, this is why after that coaching relationship was complete. For a short time, Maggie was the one who suggested that I should consider becoming a coach because according to her, my self-coaching was better than many of the professional coaches that she knew in the industry.
So, after considering it for a few months, I made the decision to make the investment of time and money to becoming a coach. I invested in business coaching really quickly when I started my business so that I would not make many of the mistakes that new entrepreneurs make, and I continue to invest in business coaching at a high level to this day.
I also invested time and money in deepening my knowledge of coaching by doing an advanced certification. I have also continued to work with Maggie one-on-one on my mindset over the past several years. We still occasionally talk about John, but she loves him almost as much as I do at this point. So, I already know what she's going to say when I bring him up.
I mean, with love, she's almost always on Team John. The other thing that you should know is that I actually just hired a new coach today to help me with rapid transformational therapy. I'm just patiently waiting for him to send me an invoice according to the Googles. Just for you guys to know, rapid transformational therapy works by guiding clients to tap into their subconscious.
To address unconscious beliefs and destructive patterns that are hindering their success, happiness and fulfillment. I, of course, will let you all know how this goes as I am an open book, but I will share what happens after I'm done or maybe while I'm doing it, depending on how things are going. So, all of this got me thinking deeply about myself and about all of my amazing clients so far.
About all the coaches that I have worked with who of course have their own coaches, and it got me thinking about the people I coach in other people's programs and what they must believe in order to make the investment of time and money to work with the coach. I came up with three main things that I believed when I started getting coaching, and these are thoughts that I think my most successful clients believed too.
The first one is that it's never too late. It's never too late to get to know yourself better. Of course, everyone who starts to see the magic that they can create in their life, the happiness that follows when they start getting coaching, every one of them says some version of, I wish I had heard about this sooner.
I wish I had started this years ago. Why didn't we learn this stuff in elementary school or high school or college or grad school? Of course, I wish I had coaching when I went through med school, when I first got married, when I was a young mom. As I spent 20 years in my first amazing career as a pediatrician, I definitely would've had such a different experience of my life.
I am forever telling my clients with young kids or those that are early in their careers or those that are not yet married, that they are so fortunate to be getting coached as young as they are. And I am forever telling my older clients that they have found coaching at the perfect time too. Being older is never a reason not to sign up for coaching.
Some of the most powerful shifts I have seen have been in the clients I have had who are grandmothers or old enough to be grandmas. I do think that there's an urgency to have a different life. If you believe one is available to you, why would you choose to stay stuck for one more day, one more month, one more year if you can avoid it.
There's a price to staying the same if you want something different for your life, just as there's a price to changing your life. I will never forget the urgency I felt to hear how my first coach was going to help me create a new life for myself. I had no idea what was in store for me, and I'm so grateful I took that leap.
The second belief that I think is imperative to have is that everything is changeable. Everything is changeable. Nothing in our lives is set in stone. We can reinvent ourselves as much or as little as we want. We can reinvent ourselves as many times as we want. I think that one of the biggest challenges we face when we get to a certain age is the belief that we are somehow done.
I think of Melissa before coaching as Melissa 1.0, and I think I'm on like Melissa 8.0 at this point, and I have no thoughts about continuing to iterate. Like I have no problem with just knowing that there's just always going to be a new update, a new version of me that I'm going to love even more. Okay, so. A lot of us think that once we achieve some of the things that we say we want in life, we should have it all set in stone.
That the way we have always done things is the way we're going to continue to do them. That the people we are friends with now are going to be our friends forever. That the traditions we practice are going to be the ones we practice forever. That the things that were important to us 10 years ago should be as important to us now and into perpetuity.
That the values that we were raised with should be the ones we hold dear. Now, none of this has to be true for you. You can do a complete 180 if you choose. You don't have to do it all in one day or one week or one year. You can take as much or as little time as you need. You also don't need to blow up your life.
You get to keep the things that are working for you. There is no need to change what is already working well for you. We just get to question what is and what isn't working with so much love for you, all the while showing your brain how it makes complete sense that you've made the decisions and choices you've made up to this point.
The third thing is a willingness to invest in themselves, the belief that they are worth the investment. This includes both the investment of time, which of course is precious and not a renewable resource and money, which I see as a completely renewable resource. Many of my clients have already invested heavily in themselves trying to find just the right combination of things, the right combination of vacations, home remodels, Amazon purchases.
You name it, whatever they think will make them happy. Many of my clients have already invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in obtaining their degree and thousands of hours, and they are still paying for that investment. Just ask me how I know for many of my potential clients, the idea of investing in their family or their kids causes them to not blink an eye.
The kids need to go to sleep away camp for thousands of dollars. No problem. Trip to Walt Disney World for $1 million. That might be a slight exaggeration. No problem. We'll find a way to make it work. They don't even pause when they think of investing time and or money into those that they love. My clients who get the most bang for their buck right away when we start working together have already figured out how they're going to fit coaching into their schedules, and they have already figured out how they're going to pay for coaching before they ever get on the consult with me.
My other most successful women aren't yet sure how they're going to pay for it or how they're going to make the same day and time every week work for six months. But they have the belief that they will figure it out. Once they do figure it out, the magic starts to happen. I see my clients uplevel their self-concept almost immediately after we make the transaction.
They come to the first coaching call a different person than the person they were on the consult, and that's before the coaching even begins. My goal, which has been modeled for me by my coach, Maggie, after each session, my client walks away with the thought that each call is worth her single investment.
Since I hold this belief, my clients will often say on a call, this one call was worth my entire investment. So, when they add up what they've learned about themselves, what they have changed, and what they have powerfully decided to keep the same, they have a priceless result at the end of our coaching relationship.
It's funny. Owen and I were sitting out by the fire pit one evening earlier this month and he asked me, mom, can you even believe this is your life? No buddy, I really can't. And yes, buddy, I totally can all at the same time. That was my answer for him. I believe each of us was put here to live an extraordinary life.
I know that my life has become even more extraordinary because of coaching, and I know that all of my clients' lives have become more extraordinary because they were willing to hold some belief for themselves. Like I have said before, if you need me to hold some belief in you, for you initially, I will be honored to hold as much belief as you need for you as you get started.
This is so easy for me because I have zero drama about believing that number one, it's never too late to change your life if you want to do so. Number two, everything in your life is changeable if you want it to be. And number three, that you are worth every moment and every penny that you invest in getting to know yourself and becoming your favorite version of you.
Please take a moment to look at your calendar and decide right now to spend some time with me on a consult. I want to hear from you how I can help you.
